The Santa Justa Lift is a roughly 45 m neo-Gothic wrought-iron elevator in Lisbon's Baixa district, linking the lower streets to Largo do Carmo on the hill above. Opened in July 1902 and designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, an admirer of Gustave Eiffel, its ornate ironwork strongly recalls the Eiffel Tower. From the top you look out over Baixa, Rossio Square, São Jorge Castle and the ruins of the Carmo Convent.

RulesThe topmost rooftop viewing platform has reportedly been closed since 2025 for renovation. The lift ride and the upper walkway still operate, but confirm the latest opening status before you go.
CautionThe lift area and the wider Baixa/Rossio streets are known scam spots. Watch for fake drug sellers (really a theft setup), fake plainclothes 'police' asking to inspect your wallet, and shell/three-card games; be wary of strangers who approach you.
SafetyIn the queue, the small cabin and the crowded upper walkway, keep your bag in front and phone and wallet secured deep in a pocket. Take extra care after dark around Rossio and Avenida da Liberdade.
MannersThe cabin holds only a small number of riders (around 24), so numbers are limited each trip. Don't cut the line, and be considerate of others' photos and movement in the tight cabin and on the narrow viewing walkway.
RulesPricing is layered: a tourist round-trip fare, a much cheaper fare with a Viva Viagem transit card, and a separate viewing-deck fee all differ. Check current prices, and note a transit card can be far cheaper.
SeasonIn peak daytime hours the queue at the base can be very long. Visit early morning or after sunset for shorter waits, or walk up from Chiado to reach the upper viewpoint area with no line.
