Gyeongbokgung, founded in 1395, was the first and main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty and is the largest of Seoul's five grand palaces, sitting right in the city center. Burned down during the 1592 Imjin War, it was rebuilt in 1867 under regent Heungseon Daewongun and showcases the finest Joseon royal architecture in halls like Geunjeongjeon and Gyeonghoeru. The grounds also hold the National Palace Museum and National Folk Museum, so plan at least half a day.

Good to know
RulesThe palace is closed every Tuesday. If Tuesday is a public holiday it stays open and closes the next weekday instead, so check before you go.
RulesHours change by season and last admission is one hour before closing. If arriving late in the day, confirm the ticket cutoff time first.
SeasonMuch of the palace is open courtyard with little shade. Bring a hat or sun umbrella for summer heat, and warm layers for the strong winter cold and wind.
MannersDo not touch or lean on the wooden structures, floors, or painted (dancheong) surfaces, and stay on marked paths and outside roped-off areas.
CautionHanbok rental shops near Gyeongbokgung Station vary widely in price and return conditions. Confirm the rental duration and any extra fees before signing.
SafetyStone-paved ground, thresholds, and steps make it hard for strollers and wheelchairs. Wear comfortable shoes and use the subway exit with an elevator if carrying luggage.
Practical info
Hours run roughly 09:00-17:00 in winter to 09:00-18:30 in summer, with last admission one hour before closing; closed Tuesdays. Adult (ages 19-64) admission is about 3,000 KRW, and entry is free for visitors in hanbok and for everyone on 'Culture Day', the last Wednesday of each month (verify current prices and hours on the official Korea Heritage Service / Royal Palaces site). It connects directly to Exit 5 of Gyeongbokgung Station on subway Line 3.
