Alfama is Lisbon's oldest historic district, a maze of Moorish-era alleys and stairways tumbling down a hillside. SafetyPickpocket alert: Alfama and the Tram 28 route are among Europe's most notorious pickpocket corridors. On crowded trams keep your bag in front and stow your wallet and phone in a zipped inner pocket.
SafetyStreets are narrow, steep and full of steps, and the cobblestones get slippery. Sturdy, comfortable shoes are essential; avoid deserted alleys late at night.
MannersSilence is the etiquette during a fado performance. Once the singing starts, stop talking, filming and using flash, and applaud only when the song ends. Smart-casual dress (no shorts or flip-flops) is expected.
RulesChurch dress code: religious sites such as the Sé Cathedral are free to enter but require modest dress covering shoulders and knees. Viewing is restricted during Mass, so time your visit around services.
SeasonDuring June's Santo António festival (Festas de Lisboa), Alfama becomes extremely crowded with grilled sardines and street parties, peaking on the 12th–13th. If crowds and noise are a concern, aim for early-June evenings.
CautionRefuse friendly street approaches offering bracelets, drugs or tours. A 'helpful' stranger in a crowd may be setting up a pickpocket distraction.
Practical info
Book St. George's Castle online (official BOL channel); it runs until 21:00 in the March–October high season and 18:00 off-season (confirm current prices and hours). Fado houses usually open around 20:00, so phone or online reservations are safest. Board Tram 28 at Martim Moniz to get a seat, or take bus 737 as a less-crowded alternative.
