Opened in 1906 in central Porto, Livraria Lello is often called one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world for its lavish blend of Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau design. Its signature features are the sweeping red staircase and a large stained-glass skylight, and it is popularly known as a 'Harry Potter' pilgrimage site because author J.K. Rowling lived in Porto. That said, Rowling herself has denied that the shop inspired Hogwarts, and no Harry Potter films were shot here.

SafetyIt is a small, extremely crowded space, so mind your belongings around the staircase and shelves against pickpocketing. Large bags are restricted and backpacks must be worn on the front, so it is easier to leave luggage at your accommodation or a São Bento station locker.
SeasonThe June–August summer peak floods both the city and the shop, with entry queues of 30–60 minutes or more. Weekday early mornings (around the 9am opening) or the late afternoon just before closing, and the April–May / September–October shoulder seasons, are noticeably calmer.
