Overview

The Dom Luís I Bridge is Porto's iconic double-deck iron arch bridge, spanning the Douro River between Porto's Ribeira quarter and Vila Nova de Gaia. Completed in 1886 and designed by German engineer Théophile Seyrig, a former associate of Gustave Eiffel, it carries the metro (Line D) and pedestrians on the upper deck and vehicles and pedestrians on the lower one. Crossing on foot is free and possible 24 hours a day, rewarding visitors with sweeping river and old-town views.

Walking across is free and open 24 hours. The upper deck is reachable via Porto Metro Line D (walkable from near São Bento). Confirm fares, traffic rules and viewpoint opening hours before you go. For sunset shots use the Serra do Pilar viewpoint; for a quiet walk, take the upper deck early.
