The Dom Luís I Bridge is Porto's iconic double-deck iron arch bridge, spanning the Douro River between Porto's Ribeira quarter and Vila Nova de Gaia. Completed in 1886 and designed by German engineer Théophile Seyrig, a former associate of Gustave Eiffel, it carries the metro (Line D) and pedestrians on the upper deck and vehicles and pedestrians on the lower one. Crossing on foot is free and possible 24 hours a day, rewarding visitors with sweeping river and old-town views.

SafetyThe upper-deck walkway runs alongside the metro (light rail) tracks. It is fenced off, but keep a firm hold of children and pets and never step toward the tracks as trains pass.

CautionPorto's old town, the Ribeira riverfront and the crowded bridge attract pickpockets. Wear bags across your front and keep wallet and passport in an inner pocket.
SeasonThe upper deck gets very crowded at sunset and in peak season. For calmer views and photos, come early in the morning. The iron deck can be slippery when wet.
RulesDuring the day the lower roadway is generally limited to public transport, taxis, cyclists and emergency vehicles, with general traffic usually allowed only at night (check locally). Verify current rules if you plan to drive across.

Walking across is free and open 24 hours. The upper deck is reachable via Porto Metro Line D (walkable from near São Bento). Confirm fares, traffic rules and viewpoint opening hours before you go. For sunset shots use the Serra do Pilar viewpoint; for a quiet walk, take the upper deck early.
