Mercado do Bolhão is Porto's historic covered market, with roots dating to 1839 and its current Neoclassical building erected in 1914. After a four-year restoration it reopened in September 2022, keeping its two-level galleried courtyard and azulejo tiles while adding modern logistics. Some 80 family-run stalls sell fresh fish, produce, meat, cheese, flowers and wine, making it both a tourist landmark and a working market where locals still shop.

MannersVisit on a weekday morning, ideally before 10:00, for a calmer, more local atmosphere. Greet vendors with a 'Bom dia' or 'Boa tarde', and inspect produce gently rather than handling it excessively.
RulesCarry small cash, including 1- and 2-euro coins. Wine and meat stalls widely take cards, but the traditional produce and fish stalls in the courtyard are often cash-only.
SafetyIn crowded aisles keep your bag closed and worn to the front and avoid flashing valuables, as busy tourist spots invite pickpockets. Crowds peak on Saturdays and on summer mornings.
MannersAsk before photographing vendors and their goods. For wide shots of the courtyard, use the upper gallery walkways, which frame the azulejo tiles and stalls nicely.
