Kennin-ji, founded in 1202, is the oldest Zen (Rinzai) temple in Kyoto, established by the monk Eisai, who introduced Zen Buddhism and tea culture to Japan. Set in the Higashiyama district just south of the Gion entertainment quarter, it is easy to reach on a downtown sightseeing route and is prized for its serene gardens and monumental artworks. It is the head temple of the Kennin-ji branch of Rinzai Zen and one of Kyoto's Five Great Zen Temples (Gozan).
