🇯🇵 Pontocho

先斗町 · 교토부 교토시 나카교구

Location

Overview

Pontocho is a narrow, roughly 490 m lantern-lit alley running parallel to the Kamo River in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, and one of the city's five remaining hanamachi (geisha districts). Formed in the Edo period, it is lined with bengara-red wooden machiya townhouses and packed with restaurants ranging from traditional Kyoto cuisine and izakaya to French and Italian dining, making it one of Kyoto's most atmospheric dining and nightlife lanes. In the evenings you may glimpse geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentices) moving between engagements.

Good to know

Practical info

About a 5-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station (Hankyu) and roughly 1 minute from Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan). Most restaurants open in the evening (around 17:00) and the alley is quiet by day. Many small, traditional venues are cash-only, so carry cash, and reserve ahead for summer riverside seats, dance tickets, and popular restaurants. Verify prices, hours, and performance dates before visiting.
