Shoren-in is a Tendai-sect 'monzeki' temple in the Awataguchi area of Kyoto's Higashiyama district, historically headed by imperial-family princes and also known as 'Awata Gosho' (Awata Imperial Palace). Shinran, founder of the Jodo Shinshu sect, is said to have been ordained here at age nine, and the temple holds the National Treasure painting 'Blue Fudo Myoo.' Far less crowded than Kiyomizu-dera or Yasaka Shrine, it is a serene spot to sit and take in the gardens.
Five giant camphor trees lining the gate, roughly 800 years old, said to have been planted by Shinran and registered as a Kyoto City Natural Monument.
The Kacho-den hall's 60 lotus-themed fusuma (sliding-door) paintings by artist Hideki Kimura, viewed while seated on tatami.
The Ryushin-chi pond garden, a stroll garden attributed to the Muromachi-era artist Soami.
