La Boqueria is Barcelona's largest and most famous public market, officially the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, located halfway down La Rambla in the Ciutat Vella. With a history stretching back over 800 years and a landmark iron-and-glass Modernista roof completed in 1914, it is a feast for the senses — piled high with fruit, seafood, jamón, cheese and ready-to-eat tapas. Entry is free, and it remains both a working local market and a world-renowned tourist destination.

SafetyThis is one of the highest-risk pickpocketing spots in Europe. Teams work the entrance and the densest aisles, so wear your bag in front, keep zips closed, and keep your phone and wallet within reach at all times.
CautionThe pre-cut fruit cups at the front stalls (€3–5) carry a heavy location premium and cost far more than the same fruit costs deeper inside the market or at any local supermarket.
SeasonThe market is closed on Sundays and public holidays, and fish stalls are typically shut on Mondays — check the day if seafood is your goal.
MannersStopping to photograph and blocking the narrow aisles disrupts residents and vendors who are actually shopping. Popular stalls get packed in the morning; the back counters are calmer and cheaper.
