St Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) is the Byzantine cathedral on Venice's St Mark's Square that houses the relics of St Mark the Evangelist. Rebuilt around 1063 and consecrated in 1094, it is nicknamed the 'Church of Gold' (Chiesa d'Oro) for its interior of more than 8,000 square metres of golden mosaics. With its Greek-cross plan and five domes, it is Venice's most iconic landmark.

RulesThe dress code is strictly enforced — shoulders and knees must be covered, sleeveless tops are banned, and hats must be removed. Guards will refuse entry to anyone non-compliant, even with a pre-booked timed ticket.
RulesBags of any kind (handbags, backpacks, suitcases, bum bags) are not allowed inside. Deposit them for free at the Ateneo San Basso next to the basilica before entering.
RulesPhotography and filming are prohibited inside. Keep quiet and be especially respectful if visiting during a service.
CautionSt Mark's Square is a hotspot for bracelet-tying, fake petitions, and vendors pushing 'free' roses or bird seed then demanding money. Firmly refuse anything placed in your hand — these are also used as pickpocket distractions.
SafetyPickpockets work in teams across the square and when boarding/leaving vaporetti, targeting you while you take photos or chat. Wear bags in front and split your valuables.
SeasonFrom October to January (especially autumn and winter), 'acqua alta' high tides flood the square first, as it is the lowest point in the city. Check tide forecasts and bring waterproof footwear; raised walkways may be in use.
Practical info
Basic entry has shifted to a timed-slot reservation system that is effectively mandatory in high season (small booking fee on the official site), with 30-minute entry windows. The Pala d'Oro, Museum and Loggia require separate tickets. Hours are generally daily 09:30–17:15 (Sundays/holidays from 14:00), last entry around 16:45 — but always reconfirm prices, hours and booking rules on the official site before visiting. Early morning or late afternoon is quieter, and summer/holiday slots sell out weeks ahead.
