🇮🇹 Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square)

Piazza San Marco · 베네치아

Location

Overview

Piazza San Marco is the beating heart of Venice and one of Italy's most iconic squares, ringed by the Byzantine St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the 99-metre Campanile bell tower. Napoleon is said to have called it "the finest drawing room in Europe," and the grand arcaded square itself is the main attraction. As the lowest point in the historic city, it can flood during the autumn-to-winter 'acqua alta' high-water season.

Practical info

Online timed-entry booking is effectively essential for the basilica, Campanile, and Doge's Palace (slots often sell out 1-2 weeks ahead in the peak April-October season and on weekends). Allow 10-20 minutes for mandatory security screening. Cafes on the square are very expensive (an espresso costs several times the back-street price), so check the posted prices first. Verify fees, hours, and rules on official sites before visiting.
