SafetyThe square is a top pickpocket target because of the dense crowds. Thieves strike while you're distracted by pigeons or photos, so wear a crossbody bag in front and keep zippers closed.
CautionWatch for people pushing roses, bracelets, or pigeon feed into your hands and then demanding money, and 'helpers' at vaporetto ticket machines. Don't accept anything and refuse firmly.
RulesFeeding pigeons has been banned since 2008 (fines up to about EUR 500). Sitting on steps, monument bases, or the ground to eat or drink is also enforced under Venice's 'decorum' rules. Verify current regulations before you go.
MannersSt. Mark's Basilica enforces a strict dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered (no tank tops, short shorts, or miniskirts). Even with a booked ticket you'll be turned away if you don't comply, so carry a light scarf or cover-up.
RulesBasilica entry is now online timed-entry only (on-site sales ended July 2025), so advance booking is effectively essential. Large backpacks aren't allowed and must be left at the free nearby cloakroom (Calle San Basso). Confirm fees and hours at the latest.

Online timed-entry booking is effectively essential for the basilica, Campanile, and Doge's Palace (slots often sell out 1-2 weeks ahead in the peak April-October season and on weekends). Allow 10-20 minutes for mandatory security screening. Cafes on the square are very expensive (an espresso costs several times the back-street price), so check the posted prices first.
