Location

Overview

Plaza Mayor is the 17th-century Baroque heart of Madrid's Habsburg quarter — a rectangular square 129m by 94m, enclosed by uniform red buildings with 237 balconies. Once the medieval market square (Plaza del Arrabal), it was rebuilt to Juan Gómez de Mora's design and completed in 1619 under Philip III, surviving three major fires to reach its present form. Its landmarks are the frescoed Casa de la Panadería and the equestrian statue of Philip III; the square itself is free and open 24 hours.

Practical info

A few minutes' walk from Metro Sol (lines 1, 2, 3). Entry is free and the square is open 24/7; 1-2 hours is enough to explore. For food, skip the square's terraces in favor of the nearby Mercado de San Miguel or the Cava Baja / La Latina area a 5-10 minute walk away, which offer more local flavor and value. Confirm current prices, hours and market dates before your visit.
