The Naschmarkt is Vienna's most famous market, a long ribbon of around 130 to 170 stalls stretching between the Karlsplatz and Kettenbrückengasse U-Bahn stations, selling produce, spices, cheese, fish, deli goods and street food. Beloved for more than two centuries, it is known for its dazzling mountains of spices and dried fruit and for its huge Saturday flea market. A major redevelopment is underway: the leafy 'Naschpark' opened in autumn 2025 on a former car park, and a new indoor 'Marktraum' hall of regional producers opened in November 2025. It's best enjoyed as a half-day morning stroll that mixes food, people-watching and browsing.

CautionSpice, dried-fruit and sweets vendors often press 'free' samples into your hands, then charge a steep per-100g price. Always confirm the price per 100g or per kilo and the final total before they scoop anything, and firmly decline if you don't want it.
SafetyThe Naschmarkt is named by Austrian police as a national pickpocketing hotspot. Organised thieves work the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, especially at the Saturday flea market, so wear a cross-body bag worn to the front and keep your wallet and phone out of sight.
RulesThe market is closed on Sundays (some restaurants and bars stay open). Stalls open Mon-Fri from 6 a.m., typically closing 6-7 p.m. on weekdays and around 6 p.m. on Saturdays; the flea market runs only on Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Time your visit to the right day.
MannersAt restaurants and cafes it's customary to tip around 5-10% when you pay. During the noon lunch rush tables are packed tightly and service can be brusque, so visit off-peak if you want a relaxed meal.
SeasonThis is an open-air market, so weather matters. In summer (July) it gets very crowded and hot, so go early in the morning; in winter dress warmly. If the flea market is your goal, you must come on a Saturday.
SafetySince March 2026, Wiener Linien has been sealing and renovating the U4 underpass at Kettenbrückengasse (expected to finish around end of August 2026), which has temporarily displaced some of the Saturday farmers' stalls. Redevelopment continues into 2027, so routes and layout may differ from maps; follow on-site signage.
Practical info
Reach it directly via U4 Kettenbrückengasse station (south end) or Karlsplatz station (U1, U2, U4; north end). There is no entry ticket; you browse freely and pay at individual stalls and eateries, and the flea market runs on Saturdays only. Because of 2026 construction and redevelopment, hours and layout may change, so check the latest information before you go.
