Overview
The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) is Austria's foremost art museum, opened in 1891 on Maria-Theresien-Platz to house the centuries-old art collections of the Habsburgs. Its Picture Gallery holds Old Master masterpieces by Bruegel, Vermeer, Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, Rubens and Velázquez, alongside celebrated Egyptian, Classical Antiquities and Kunstkammer (treasury) collections. As of 2026 the permanent galleries are joined by special shows such as 'Canaletto & Bellotto' (Mar–Sep), and the palatial Renaissance-Revival building itself — with its grand staircase and domed café — rewards half a day or more.

CautionPickpocketing is common around the Ringstrasse, the Museum Quarter and on the U-Bahn. Wear bags in front and keep your wallet and passport in an inside pocket.
RulesLarge backpacks, roller cases and umbrellas are not allowed inside; use the free cloakroom. Last admission is generally about 30 minutes before closing.

SeasonIn summer (June–August) the museum also opens on Mondays but gets very crowded; book a timed ticket and arrive early. It is normally closed on Mondays from September to May — verify current dates.
MannersDo not touch the artworks and keep a distance; flash and tripod photography are restricted, and quiet is expected in the galleries.
SafetyVienna is generally safe, but stay alert to your belongings on crowded trams and subways, and make use of the air-conditioned interior during summer heat.

It sits on Maria-Theresien-Platz, a 5-minute walk from U-Bahn Volkstheater (U2/U3) or the Burgring/Kunsthistorisches Museum stop on trams 1, 2, 71 and D. Open Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00 (Thursdays until late), with Mondays added in June–August and closed on Mondays otherwise — always check the official website (khm.at) for the latest hours, closures, prices and special exhibitions.
