Nara Park is a vast 660-hectare park in central Nara, famous for its roughly 1,200 freely roaming wild deer and its cluster of World Heritage temples and shrines. Todaiji with its 15-metre Great Buddha, Kasuga Taisha, and Kofukuji all sit within walking distance of one another. The deer are a protected National Natural Monument, and visitors may feed them only with the official 'shika senbei' deer crackers.

Good to know
SafetyThe deer are wild animals. When agitated they can charge, gore with antlers, bite, or kick, so avoid crowding them or touching them from behind.
SeasonAntlered males turn aggressive in the autumn rutting season, and mothers protecting fawns become defensive in spring; keep extra distance during these periods.
RulesFeed only the official shika senbei crackers. Never give sweets, bread, vegetables or other human food, which can make the deer sick or cause accidents.
MannersTeasing a deer by holding crackers back can get you bitten. Give crackers one at a time and quickly, then open both empty hands to show you have none left.
SafetyDeer will try to eat plastic bags, maps, pamphlets and paper. Secure loose items and keep bag zippers closed.
Practical info
The park itself is free and open around the clock as an open green space. Shika senbei crackers cost a fixed 200 yen per pack of 10. Todaiji's Great Buddha Hall opens 7:30-17:30 (Apr-Oct) and 8:00-17:00 (Nov-Mar); admission is 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children aged 6-12 (please verify current fees and hours). From Kintetsu-Nara Station it is a few minutes' walk east; from JR Nara Station about 20 minutes on foot or a short city bus ride.
