Kōfuku-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage temple in central Nara, founded in 710 as the clan temple of the powerful Fujiwara family and today the head temple of the Hossō school. Its spacious grounds hold the National Treasure Museum (home to the celebrated Ashura statue), the Central Golden Hall rebuilt in 2018, the Eastern Golden Hall, and the octagonal Nanendo. It adjoins Nara Park, so free-roaming deer appear right away, and it is just a five-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station.

Good to know
SeasonThe National Treasure five-story pagoda is under a major 'Reiwa' restoration (its first in ~120 years) and is completely enclosed in a large cover, so its iconic silhouette cannot be seen until around 2032 or later. Do not visit expecting a pagoda photo; check the official notice first.
SafetyThe deer in adjoining Nara Park are wild animals. Male deer, especially during the autumn rut, gore with their antlers and injuries have risen sharply; biting, headbutting, and kicking can also occur. Keep small children and crackers under control.
MannersWhen feeding shika senbei (deer crackers), hand them over promptly rather than teasing. Hiding or holding out the crackers makes deer bite clothing and bags. Never feed them human food or plastic bags.
RulesPhotography is strictly prohibited inside the National Treasure Museum and paid halls. Walking the grounds is free, but the National Treasure Museum, Central Golden Hall, and Eastern Golden Hall each require a separate admission or a combination ticket (verify fees and hours).
MannersThis is an active place of worship. Keep quiet around ceremonies and worshippers and behave respectfully before the Buddhist images and main deities.
Practical info
About a 5-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, or ~20 minutes from JR Nara Station. The grounds are free and open; the National Treasure Museum, Central Golden Hall, and Eastern Golden Hall are paid (combination tickets available). Hall viewing is generally 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:45), but confirm fees and hours on the official site before visiting.
