🇭🇺 Matthias Church

Mátyás-templom · 부다페스트

Location

Overview

Matthias Church is a Roman Catholic church perched on Castle Hill in Budapest's Buda Castle Quarter. Officially the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, it is popularly named after King Matthias I (Corvinus), who added its soaring south tower and held two weddings here. It is celebrated for its dazzling diamond-patterned Zsolnay-tiled roof, its richly decorated Neo-Gothic interior, and its role as the coronation church of the Habsburgs — Franz Joseph I in 1867 and the last Hungarian king, Charles IV, in 1916. As of 2026 the church is open for regular visits with no major closure or restoration, though access is restricted during Masses, concerts and state ceremonies, so check the official site before you go. Sitting right beside Fisherman's Bastion, it pairs naturally into a half-day tour of the castle hilltop.
