🇭🇺 Fisherman's Bastion

Halászbástya · 부다페스트

Location

Overview

Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya) is a Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic viewing terrace on Buda's Castle Hill, next to Matthias Church, designed and built by Frigyes Schulek between 1895 and 1902. Never a real fortress, it was conceived as a decorative lookout and promenade, and its seven fairy-tale turrets — symbolizing the seven Magyar chieftains who founded Hungary — have made it one of Budapest's most photographed landmarks, offering sweeping views of the Danube, the Parliament and the Pest skyline. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (Budapest, the Banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle Quarter, inscribed 1987). As of 2026, the lower terraces are free and open year-round, while only the upper towers are ticketed during set hours.
