Location

Overview

Buda Castle (Budavári Palota) is the historic royal palace of the Hungarian kings, crowning Castle Hill above the Danube and forming the centrepiece of the UNESCO-listed Buda Castle Quarter. First built in the 13th century and flourishing as a Renaissance seat under King Matthias, it was repeatedly destroyed and restored through the Ottoman wars and the 1944–45 siege of Budapest, and today houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Since 2014 the National Hauszmann Programme has been restoring the palace quarter to its early-20th-century splendour, and work continues in parts of the complex in 2026. The free hilltop terraces offer some of the city's best panoramas of Parliament, the Chain Bridge and Pest — spectacular by day and floodlit at night.
