Kobe Harborland umie MOSAIC is the waterfront building of umie, a large shopping and dining complex on Kobe's port that opened in 1992 and comprises three sections (MOSAIC, North Mall and South Mall) with around 230 shops. Facing the harbor, MOSAIC lines the water with restaurants, a Ferris wheel and a children's Anpanman Museum, making it a favorite for daytime seaside strolls and famous evening night views of Kobe Port Tower. It is an easy 5-8 minute walk from JR Kobe Station.
Terraced waterfront restaurants look directly across the harbor to Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum, especially scenic when illuminated at night.
The Mosaic Big Ferris Wheel gives roughly a 10-15 minute rotation with views over the Kobe cityscape, Mount Rokko and the illuminated port (fares change; confirm latest, and cash is often needed).
The night view is the signature draw, from the sunset 'magic hour' through the evening when the waterfront lights up; a Winter Illumination runs roughly November-February.
At the southern end of MOSAIC sit the Kobe Anpanman Children's Museum & Mall, ideal for families with young children.
Meriken Park, Kobe Port Tower and the cruise terminal are all within about a 10-minute walk, making it easy to combine several bay-area sights.
Good to know
SeasonBecause the night view and illuminations are the main draw, check the seasonal sunset time and aim for the evening (roughly 5-10 pm) to catch both daytime scenery and the lights.
RulesHours and prices for the Ferris wheel, restaurants and shops vary by day, season and individual store, so verify the latest details on the official site before you go.
RulesThe Mosaic Big Ferris Wheel is often noted as cash-only, so bring small cash to be safe (confirm card acceptance on site).
MannersWeekend and holiday evenings and the winter illumination period draw crowds and Ferris wheel queues; visit on a weekday early evening to avoid the busiest times.
SafetyThe seafront decks and railings get windy and can be slippery after dark, so watch children and belongings and do not lean on the railings.
