🇭🇰 Central–Mid-Levels Escalator & SoHo

中環至半山自動扶梯系統 · 蘇豪區 · 홍콩

Location

Overview

The Central–Mid-Levels Escalator, opened in October 1993 and run by Hong Kong's Transport Department, is an outdoor covered pedestrian system linking Queen's Road Central to Conduit Road: roughly 800 metres long with a 135-metre vertical climb, built from 16 reversible escalators and 3 reversible travelators. It was designed as commuter infrastructure for Mid-Levels residents, but its real legacy is SoHo — the dense grid of restaurants, bars and galleries 'South of Hollywood Road' that grew up along its path, plus a film-history footnote as a key location in Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express (1994). It still carries roughly 99,000 pedestrian trips a day (as of late 2024), so this is a working commuter artery rather than a viewing platform. Treat it as a 20-minute moving spine: ride a stretch, step off, walk a lane, rejoin.

Practical info

About a five-minute walk from MTR Central Station Exit D2 or C, with the lower terminus on Queen's Road Central beside Central Market; Hong Kong Station and Sheung Wan Station are also within walking distance. Entry is free, running downhill 6:00–10:00 a.m. and uphill 10:00 a.m.–midnight, with a full one-way ride taking roughly 20–25 minutes — but sections can be closed for maintenance or weather, so check the Transport Department page for the latest hours and section status. Opening times, reservation policies and admission for individual SoHo venues and nearby Tai Kwun and PMQ should likewise be confirmed with their official channels shortly before your visit.
