Gukje Market is a large traditional market in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, Busan, born after Korea's liberation and the Korean War when refugees and imported goods poured into the wartime capital. Its maze-like alleys pack in roughly 1,200 shops selling fabric, sundries, vintage clothing, cosmetics and street food. It is also famous as the setting of the 2014 film 'Ode to My Father' (Gukje Market).
A distinctive townscape of labyrinthine alleys, an arcade-covered sky, and a suspension bridge linking market buildings
Decades-old food street with stalls serving kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), mandu, bibim-dangmyeon and the famous seed-filled hotteok
Themed shopping lanes for vintage clothing, cosmetics and small goods that flow into one another
Ideal base for a walking loop with the adjacent Bupyeong Kkangtong night market and the Jagalchi Fish Market
A story-rich place to sense the history of Korea's wartime refuge and the hit film that made it iconic
Good to know
SafetyNarrow alleys get very crowded on weekends and at lunchtime; wear bags in front and keep your wallet and phone secure against pickpockets.
MannersFood-street stalls have limited stools with fast turnover. Order before you sit rather than just taking photos, and free up your seat for the next diner when finished.
MannersBargaining is normal for clothing and goods, but most food is fixed-price. Negotiate politely and avoid aggressive haggling.
RulesMany stalls and small shops are cash-only or prefer cash, so bring small bills. (Confirm payment options at the latest before your visit.)
SeasonMany shops close or reduce hours during Korean holidays such as Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok. Check current opening days and hours before you go.
Practical info
About a 3-7 min walk from Jagalchi Station (Line 1, Exit 7) or Nampo Station. Shops generally open roughly 09:00-20:00 (varies by stall), closed on major holidays. The covered arcade makes it a good rainy-day option; wear comfortable shoes for the many alleys. Confirm fees and hours at the latest.
