🇦🇹 Hohensalzburg Fortress

Festung Hohensalzburg · 잘츠부르크

Location

Overview

Hohensalzburg Fortress is the largest fully preserved medieval fortress in Central Europe, begun in 1077 by Prince-Archbishop Gebhard and expanded by his successors into the mighty complex seen today. Towering over Salzburg's old town on the Festungsberg, it is the city's defining landmark and famous as a castle that was never taken in battle. In 2026 it remains a top attraction, reached by funicular or on foot, with historic state rooms, museums and sweeping panoramas. Allow roughly half a day to explore it at a relaxed pace.
