Overview
Big Ben is the affectionate nickname for the Great Bell — and, popularly, the Elizabeth Tower that houses it — rising above the Palace of Westminster on the bank of the River Thames. The Palace is the seat of the UK's House of Commons and House of Lords, the so-called 'Mother of Parliaments,' and a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1987; it was rebuilt in Gothic Revival style by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin after the fire of 1834. A five-year conservation project completed in August 2022, so as of 2026 the tower gleams again and its bells ring out on the hour. It rewards a simple photo from across the river, but a pre-booked tour of the tower or the chambers turns a quick stop into a memorable visit.

RulesBoth the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) tour and the guided tour of Parliament must be booked online in advance. Tower tickets are released three months ahead, on the second Wednesday of each month at 10am London time, and sell out fast. SafetyThe tower tour climbs 334 steps with no lift and involves very loud bell and clock noise (ear defenders provided). Visitors must be aged 11 or over; if you have mobility, heart or lung concerns, ask about the separate accessible tour instead.
RulesEntry involves airport-style security screening, so arrive at least 20 minutes before your tour time. Large suitcases and big bags may not be permitted, so it is best to leave luggage at your accommodation.
