🇳🇴 Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf

Bryggen · 베르겐

Location

Overview

Bryggen is the old Hanseatic wharf lining the eastern side of the Vågen harbour in Bergen, Norway's second city, and was one of the very first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (No. 59) in 1979. From around 1350 it housed the Norwegian Kontor of the Hanseatic League — one of only four in Europe and the sole survivor with standing buildings — where German merchants traded stockfish from northern Norway for European grain. Despite repeated fires (the last in 1955), some 62 gabled wooden buildings survive, rebuilt over the centuries in the old patterns and methods. As of 2026 the flagship Hanseatic Museum is temporarily closed for a major restoration, but the wharf's atmospheric wooden alleys, Bryggens Museum and the Schøtstuene assembly rooms remain open to explore on foot.

Practical info

Bryggen sits on the east side of Vågen in central Bergen, an easy walk from Bergen railway station and the Fish Market; from Flesland airport, take the Bybanen light rail line 1 or the Flybussen airport bus, which stops at Bryggen. The alleys and outdoor wharf are free and open at all times, but check the official websites for the latest indoor opening hours and ticket prices (Bryggens Museum adults around NOK 80) and for the Hanseatic Museum's restoration reopening date before you visit.
