🇳🇴 Bergenhus Fortress

Location

Overview

Bergenhus Fortress (Bergenhus festning) guards the entrance to Bergen's harbour and is one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved fortresses, standing on the Holmen promontory that was the royal seat when Bergen was the medieval capital of Norway. Its centrepieces are Håkon's Hall (Håkonshallen, built 1247-1261), the largest secular medieval building in Norway, and the Rosenkrantz Tower, regarded as the country's foremost Renaissance monument. Badly damaged when an explosives-laden ship blew up in the harbour in 1944, the complex was restored and today serves as a museum and a venue for concerts and state functions, while part of the grounds remains an active Royal Norwegian Navy area. It sits right beside the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, so it is easy to combine on foot.

Practical info

It is about a 3-minute walk from Bryggen in central Bergen, easily reached on foot or via the Bybanen light rail plus a short walk or bus. The fortress grounds are free and open roughly 07:00-23:00 daily; the interiors of Håkon's Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower are ticketed (adults roughly NOK 120 and NOK 170, under-18s free), but prices, opening hours and closed dates change yearly, so confirm the latest with Bergen City Museum before visiting.
