🇨🇭 Zurich Old Town & Grossmünster

Grossmünster / Altstadt Zürich · 취리히

Location

Overview

The Grossmünster is Zurich's landmark Romanesque Protestant (Swiss Reformed) church, its twin towers rising above the Limmat River. From around 1519 the reformer Huldrych Zwingli preached here and launched the Swiss-German Reformation, and the sober, unadorned interior that resulted is now offset by celebrated modern stained glass by Augusto Giacometti and Sigmar Polke. Around the church spreads Zurich's Old Town (Altstadt), a web of cobbled lanes, guild houses and squares linking Lindenhof and lively Niederdorf. With the Karlsturm viewing tower's renovation wrapped up by mid-2026, it is a great time to climb it; allow at least half a day to explore the quarter on foot.

Practical info

The Grossmünster is about a 10-minute walk from Zürich main station (Zürich HB), or reach the riverside Old Town by tram to Central, Rathaus or Bellevue. The ZürichCARD (about CHF 29 for 24 hours, CHF 56 for 72 hours) covers airport-to-city and local transport plus some attractions; because church hours and tower fees vary by season and operations, confirm the latest information on the official website.
