🇨🇭 Lindenhof, Zurich

Location

Overview

Lindenhof is a car-free hilltop park and viewpoint in the heart of Zurich's Old Town (Altstadt), on the west bank of the Limmat. It occupies a site inhabited for nearly 2,000 years — from a Celtic settlement and the Roman customs town of Turicum to a Carolingian imperial palace — and is famous for the legend of the women of Zurich who, in 1292, donned armour to save the city from Habsburg forces. Today it is a quiet, leafy square shaded by linden trees and dotted with benches and giant chess boards, offering a free panorama over the Old Town, the Limmat and the Grossmünster. As of 2026 it remains open 24 hours a day at no charge — an easy, rewarding stop on any walk through central Zurich.
