Ueno Park (officially Ueno Onshi Park) opened in 1873 as one of Japan's first public parks and anchors the cultural heart of Tokyo's old shitamachi district. Across roughly 54 hectares it gathers more than 800-1,000 cherry trees, Japan's oldest zoo, several world-class national and metropolitan museums, Shinobazu Pond, and the historic Ueno Toshogu Shrine. Sitting right outside JR Ueno Station, it is highly accessible and busy year-round.

RulesBreaking branches or picking flowers is strictly forbidden. Tents, tables, chairs, portable stoves, and generators are not allowed; smoking only in designated areas. As of 2026, holding picnic banquets along Sakura-dori itself is banned (confirm latest).
CautionNear the temples and shrines, people dressed as Buddhist monks may hand you a beaded bracelet and then demand a 'donation.' Genuine monks in Japan do not approach strangers on the street for money, so politely decline.
CautionA known scam near Ueno involves someone posing as an 'art student' who invites you to a gallery and pressures you into buying overpriced prints. Decline unsolicited invitations from strangers.
SafetyThe area is relatively well-lit and busy at night, but petty pickpocketing can occur in dense crowds during peak season, so keep valuables secure.

Park entry is free; open 5:00-23:00, directly at JR Ueno Station's Park Exit. Ueno Zoo: adults 600 yen, 9:30-17:00 (last entry 16:00), closed Mondays (or the next day if Monday is a holiday). Major museums are generally 9:00-17:00 and closed Mondays. Always confirm fees, hours, and closing days on each facility's official website before visiting.
