Ameyoko (officially Ameya-Yokocho) is one of Tokyo's iconic open-air market streets, running roughly 500m along the elevated train tracks between JR Ueno and Okachimachi stations in Taito Ward, packed with about 400 shops. Born from a post-WWII black market, it now sells fresh seafood, dried goods, sweets, clothing, cosmetics, sundries and international street food. The lively 'shitamachi' (old downtown) atmosphere, full of vendors' loud calls and cheerful haggling, is a big part of the appeal.

MannersWalking while eating is considered rude. Most stalls have a small standing space, so eat in front of the shop or in a designated area and put trash in that stall's bin.
SeasonLate December (especially the 29th-31st) is extremely crowded with New-Year shoppers. Pickpocket and lost-item risk rises, so carry your bag in front and prefer a weekday morning if you want room to browse.
SafetyThe lanes are narrow and packed. Standing in a group across the path or stopping suddenly blocks the flow; keep moving and step to the side to take photos.
CautionThe same item can vary a lot in price between shops. At tourist-oriented on-the-spot seafood and fruit stalls, confirm the final total before you pay and compare a few stalls rather than accepting the first quoted price.
RulesMany seafood shops and food stalls are cash-only, and some charge per order on the spot (cash-on-delivery). Bring plenty of coins and small bills.
