Overview
Toledo Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de Toledo), the Primate Cathedral of Spain, is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Spanish High Gothic. Begun in 1226 under Ferdinand III and Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, it took roughly 270 years to build, with the central nave vaults completed around 1493. One of the largest cathedrals in Spain, it forms part of the Historic City of Toledo inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Sacristy, home to El Greco's celebrated 'The Disrobing of Christ' (El Expolio), alongside works by Goya, Titian, Velázquez and Caravaggio.
El Transparente — a Baroque sculptural masterpiece by Narciso Tomé, where light pours through an opening cut in the vault, transforming the scene throughout the day.
The Custodia de Arfe, a monumental processional monstrance of gold and silver bristling with some 260 statuettes, paraded through the city each Corpus Christi.
The intricately carved wooden Choir (Coro) and the luminous interior lit by around 750 stained-glass windows.
The soaring five-nave Gothic structure with its ranks of pillars and bell tower — a French-inspired plan adapted to Spanish taste.
Good to know
CautionThe Old Town (Casco Histórico), Zocodover square and the area around the cathedral draw crowds and pickpockets. Wear bags to the front and guard wallets and phones.
MannersThis is an active place of worship — dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), keep quiet during Mass or prayer, and note that flash and tripods may be restricted.
RulesThe ticket covers the Sacristy, treasury, cloister and principal chapels; last admission is about 30 minutes before closing. Free/discounted entry exists (e.g. children under 12) — confirm the latest terms.
RulesClosed on 1 January and 25 December, with special hours on religious feast days (Epiphany, Holy Week, Corpus Christi, 15 August, 1 November and around Christmas). Check the official website before visiting.
SafetySurrounding lanes are narrow, steep and cobbled, so footing can be slippery. Wear comfortable shoes and watch both your belongings and your step in crowds.
SeasonSummer afternoons are very hot outdoors and peak-season queues are long. Booking online or arriving at opening is more comfortable, and El Transparente is most striking when the light is strong.
Practical info
Hours are generally Mon–Sat 10:00–18:30 and Sun 14:00–18:30, with last admission about 30 minutes before closing. General tickets run roughly €10–12, but prices, hours and rules should be confirmed on the official website before your visit. A very popular day trip from Madrid.
