Location

Overview

St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) is Austria's most iconic Gothic church, rising over Stephansplatz in the heart of Vienna's old town. Begun in the 12th century and completed over many centuries, it is famous for its 137 m south tower and its dazzling glazed-tile roof, and remains the living seat (mother church) of the Archdiocese of Vienna. As of 2026 the main nave is free to enter, while the towers, catacombs and treasury are visited by ticket, and Masses continue daily. Come prepared to experience it as both a top sight and an active place of worship, and time your visit around the liturgical schedule.
