🇸🇪 Södermalm

Södermalm · 스톡홀름

Location

Overview

Södermalm (locally just 'Söder') is Stockholm's large southern island, sitting right across the water from Gamla Stan, and it is the city's most creative, locals-favourite district. Once a poor working-class quarter, it has become the place to feel Stockholm's latest trends, packed with vintage shops, cafés and bars, and design boutiques — the SoFo area (South of Folkungagatan) is even nicknamed the 'Slow Fashion District'. As of 2026 the northern gateway around Slussen is under a major, multi-year redevelopment with temporary walkways and changed transit, so approach Södermalm as a relaxed neighbourhood to explore on foot, hopping between clifftop viewpoints, museums, and cafés.

Practical info

The metro (tunnelbana) crosses the island via Red line (T13/T14) stops Mariatorget, Zinkensdamm and Hornstull, and Green line (T17/T18/T19) stops Slussen, Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull; ferries to Djurgården also depart near Slussen. Note that Slussen's redevelopment reroutes some walkways and stops, so confirm current routes, and check museum opening hours and ticket prices on official sites before visiting.
