Shitenno-ji, said to have been founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, is regarded as Japan's first state-sponsored Buddhist temple and the spiritual heart of the Tennoji district in Osaka. Its layout, with the south gate, five-story pagoda, main hall (Kondo) and lecture hall (Kodo) aligned in a straight row within a corridor, is a classic example of the Asuka-period 'Shitennoji style.' Repeatedly lost to fire and war, most buildings in the central precinct today are faithful reconstructions built from the 1960s onward.
Central precinct (Garan): the five-story pagoda, Kondo and Kodo enclosed by a corridor. The pagoda is one of the few in Japan you can climb inside (shoes off; narrow, steep stairs).
Gokuraku-jodo (Pure Land) Garden: a strolling pond garden evoking Amida Buddha's Western Paradise, with bridges and pines that shift beautifully with the seasons.
Turtle Pond (Kame-no-ike) and the hexagonal Rokujido hall, where dozens of turtles bask on the rocks — a favorite with families.
Antique flea market on the 21st and 22nd of every month (Odaishi-e / Taishi-e), one of Osaka's largest, with 300-500 stalls selling antiques, secondhand goods and street food.
Easy access: about a 2-minute walk from Exit 4 of Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka Station (Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line), or a 10-15 minute walk from Tennoji Station.

RulesPhotography is prohibited inside the Kondo (main hall) and inside the five-story pagoda, including from its top windows. When in doubt, refrain and check on-site signage.
MannersYou must remove your shoes to enter the pagoda and some halls. Stairs are narrow and steep with low ceilings — mind your footing and belongings.
