Seokguram Grotto is an artificial stone-cave sanctuary on the ridge of Mount Toham near Gyeongju, sitting about 750 m above sea level and facing the East Sea. Built during the Unified Silla period in the 8th century (traditionally 751–774 CE and credited to Kim Daeseong), it enshrines a serene seated Buddha (Sakyamuni) inside a domed chamber of fitted granite. A masterpiece of Silla Buddhist art, it was designated a National Treasure in 1962 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Bulguksa Temple in 1995.

RulesTo preserve the grotto, the interior is viewed only through a glass wall and visitors cannot go inside. An exception is Buddha's Birthday, when limited inside access around the main Buddha is opened (confirm the latest schedule).
RulesPhotography is prohibited inside the stone chamber and flash cannot be used. These rules protect the carvings, so please comply strictly.
MannersThis remains an active Buddhist sanctuary with ongoing worship, so keep quiet. Avoid loud voices, phone calls or tapping the glass, and do not block the flow of other visitors past the viewing point.
SeasonBecause it sits high on the mountain, winter brings snow, ice and strong cold winds. If you climb early to see the sunrise, prepare warm clothing and non-slip footwear.
SafetyThe Bus 12 shuttle from Bulguksa climbs a winding mountain road, so beware of motion sickness; if using the hiking trail, note that lighting is poor after dark and do not overexert.
Practical info
Admission is free (parking is charged separately). Hours vary by season, roughly around 09:00–18:00 in summer and 09:00–17:00 in winter, but confirm the latest times before visiting. There is no direct bus from central Gyeongju: travel to Bulguksa first, then transfer to the Bus 12 shuttle from opposite the Bulguksa parking lot. Buses are infrequent (about one per hour), so check the timetable in advance; from the bus stop it is about a 20-minute walk to the stone chamber.
