Bulguksa is a Jogye-Order Buddhist temple on the slopes of Mt. Toham in Gyeongju. Records say chief minister Kim Daeseong began its grand reconstruction in 751 during the Unified Silla period, completing it in 774. Home to six National Treasures—including the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas—it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995 together with the nearby Seokguram Grotto. Its stone terraces, staircases and wooden halls together form an architectural vision of a 'Buddha Land' brought down to earth.

RulesInside the halls (such as Daeung-jeon), stay quiet and do not disturb worshippers who are praying.
MannersThis is a living temple with active services. Avoid photographing Buddha statues or worshippers inside the halls, do not use flash, and follow posted signs.
RulesPets are not allowed on the temple grounds, so plan to leave animals behind (verify the latest rules).
SafetyThere are many stone steps and terraces that become slippery in rain or snow; wear sturdy shoes and use handrails.
SeasonSet on a mountainside, the temple is colder than the city in early mornings and winter, and gets very crowded on spring cherry-blossom and autumn-foliage weekends.
CautionAdmission has been free since May 2023. If anyone poses as a ticket seller and demands an 'entry fee,' refuse and check official signage (verify the latest info).

Hours 09:00–18:00 (exit by 19:00), open year-round, admission free (fee abolished in May 2023; formerly 6,000 won for adults). Address: 385 Bulguk-ro, Gyeongju. From downtown Gyeongju take city buses 10 or 11; from Singyeongju (Gyeongju) KTX station take bus 700 or 711. Confirm current hours and fees on the official website before visiting.
