Overview
Piazza Venezia is the symbolic and traffic hub of Rome's historic centre, a vast roundabout where several grand avenues meet, dominated at its southern end by the colossal white-marble Altare della Patria (the Vittoriano), Italy's monument to national unity. Built between 1885 and 1935 in honour of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, it holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame and an honour guard, with a changing-of-the-guard ceremony roughly every hour. From its rooftop panoramic terrace you get a sweeping 360-degree view over the Roman Forum, Trajan's Forum and the city.

SafetyThe area around the square is one of Rome's busiest pickpocket hotspots, especially in the crowded midday and afternoon hours when thieves work in coordinated groups. Wear your bag in front, keep zips closed and watch back-pocket wallets and phones.
CautionAlong nearby Via dei Fori Imperiali it is common to be approached with a clipboard for a 'petition against poverty and drugs' followed by a demand for a donation, or to have a bracelet or rose pressed into your hand before money is demanded. Firmly decline to sign or accept anything.
MannersThe Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a solemn national memorial. Stay quiet near the guards and eternal flame, and do not sit, lie or picnic on the monument's steps; attendants may ask you to move on.
SafetyPiazza Venezia is a large multi-road roundabout with fast, complex traffic. Do not jaywalk; cross only at the designated, clearly marked pedestrian crossings.
RulesThe rooftop panoramic terrace requires a paid ticket (via the elevator) and is separate from the free stairs and intermediate terrace. Confirm the current price, opening hours and last-admission time through official channels before you go.
SeasonOn summer afternoons the broad marble steps and terraces offer almost no shade and get very hot and sun-exposed. Early morning or near sunset is less crowded and bathes the white marble in golden light, ideal for photos. Bring a hat, water and sun protection.

Entry to the monument itself is free, but the glass elevator up to the rooftop terrace requires a ticket. It is about a 12-minute walk from Colosseo metro station (Line B) along Via dei Fori Imperiali, and many visitors simply reach it on foot from the historic centre.
