🇬🇷 Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)

Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο (Καλλιμάρμαρο) · 아테네

Location

Overview

The Panathenaic Stadium, known as 'Kallimarmaro' ('beautiful marble' in Greek), is the only stadium in the world built entirely of white marble. First laid out around 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games and rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus in Roman times, it was excavated and restored to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, cementing its place in sporting history. In 2026 it remains a living monument: the finish line of the Athens Marathon and the site where the Olympic flame is handed to each host nation. Climb its horseshoe-shaped tiers for sweeping views over Athens toward the Acropolis.
