Overview

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) is a roughly 52-metre monument on the Tagus riverfront in Lisbon's Belém district, celebrating Portugal's 15th- and 16th-century Age of Discovery. Inaugurated in 1960 for the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator's death, it is shaped like the prow of a caravel setting out to sea, led by Prince Henry and lined with 33 statues of explorers, monarchs, navigators and scientists. A rooftop viewpoint offers sweeping views over Belém, the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Tagus estuary.

Practical info

From central Lisbon (e.g. Praça do Comércio), take Tram 15 (about 30 minutes) or bus 728 to Belém, then walk to the riverfront. Allow roughly 40 minutes for a full visit (about 15 minutes at the viewpoint, 25 in the exhibition). Prices and hours vary by season, so check the official site for the latest, and combine it with the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower for an efficient half-day.
