The Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon's Belém district is the supreme masterpiece of Portugal's Manueline style, inscribed in 1983 (together with Belém Tower) as Portugal's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the early 16th century with the wealth of the Age of Discoveries, it was raised to honor Vasco da Gama's successful voyage to India. RulesAs a religious monument, a dress code is enforced at the entrance: shoulders and knees must be covered, and short shorts, off-shoulder tops, and very short dresses may be refused (check latest).
SafetyTram 15, the main route here, gets extremely crowded and is a favorite target of pickpockets. Don't stand near the doors, wear bags on your front, and beware of camera straps being cut.
SeasonIn high season the ticket queue can reach up to two hours. Booking online is strongly advised; arrive about 30 minutes before opening or come late in the day to avoid the worst crowds (check latest).
RulesClosed Mondays and on certain public holidays (1 Jan, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 Jun, 25 Dec). Tuesdays tend to be busier than expected due to the Monday closure backlog (check latest).

CautionThe nearby original Pastéis de Belém shop draws queues as long as the monastery's; watch for line-cutting and crowding, and use the takeaway kiosks to cut wait times.
