🇧🇪 Markt (Market Square), Bruges

Markt · 브뤼헤

Location

Overview

The Markt is the historic heart of Bruges, the central square where wool and cloth were traded from the Middle Ages onward. It is framed by the 83-metre Belfry (Belfort), the neo-Gothic Provincial Court (Provinciaal Hof), and a row of colourful stepped-gable guild houses, all part of the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Bruges. In 2026 it remains a living square: a weekly market fills it on Wednesday mornings and horse-drawn carriages depart from here, making it the natural starting point for exploring the city.

Practical info

Reach the Markt on foot in about 20-25 minutes from Bruges station or by city bus; drivers should use the Centrum-'t Zand car park, as the old centre is car-restricted. The square itself is a free open space around the clock, while climbing the Belfry is ticketed with timed entry, so check opening hours and prices on the official site before you go.
