Overview
The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is a monumental water, light and music fountain designed by Carles Buïgas for Barcelona's 1929 International Exposition. It sits at the foot of the National Palace (MNAC) at the end of Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, just above Plaça d'Espanya. Its free evening light-and-music show is the main draw; after roughly three years offline for drought and a major renovation, it reopened in September 2025 and remains one of the city's most accessible night attractions.
The show combines jets of water with colored lighting choreographed to classical, opera and pop music, running in short sequences of about 15–20 minutes over the evening window.
The avenue directly in front (Avinguda Maria Cristina) is the classic close-up spot but the busiest; the steps of the MNAC museum offer a wider view with the fountain framed against the city skyline.
A 2025 overhaul replaced roughly 4,760 old incandescent bulbs with about 680 LEDs and modernized the sound and control systems, sharpening the light and music effects.
The illuminated National Palace forms a dramatic backdrop, and nearby sights include Plaça d'Espanya, the Venetian-style twin towers and Poble Espanyol.
Entry is free with no tickets or reservations, and the open public space lets you arrive, watch and leave freely during the show window.

CautionNearby Plaça Espanya metro station and the crowded fountain viewing area are among Barcelona's known pickpocket hotspots. Keep bags in front of you and don't leave your phone or wallet exposed in the crush.

RulesIndividual nights can be cancelled for weather, city events or water restrictions. The fountain was fully shut down for years due to drought (2022–2025), so confirm same-day notices as well as the seasonal calendar.
MannersPrime spots fill up 30–45 minutes before showtime on busy nights, so arrive early; you'll often end up sitting on concrete, so bringing a mat or thin cushion helps.
SafetyWhen the show ends, large crowds surge back toward Plaça Espanya metro at once. Stay mindful of your belongings in the crush and agree on a meeting point with children or companions in advance.
