Kraków's Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), laid out in 1257 with the city's charter, is a square measuring over 200 m per side and ranks among the largest medieval market squares in Europe, forming the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town. It is framed by the Renaissance Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), St Mary's Basilica with its hourly hejnał trumpet call, the surviving Town Hall Tower, and the Adam Mickiewicz Monument, and remains the city's social and cultural centre. The square itself is a free, 24-hour pedestrian zone, and in 2026 it stays lively with open-air cafés, horse-drawn carriages and seasonal festivals. It makes an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding sights on foot.

Good to know
CautionBeware the 'free gift' flower or bracelet pressed into your hand and then billed 20-50 PLN, and the 'bar girl' scam where women invite male tourists to bars that hit them with huge tabs. Firmly decline items and invitations handed out on the square or Floriańska Street.
CautionRestaurants directly on the square often use inflated 'tourist menus'; check prices before ordering or walk a few minutes into the side streets. At private ATMs (e.g. Euronet) always decline the home-currency conversion (DCC) and choose to be charged in Polish złoty.
SafetyPickpockets work the crowded square, Floriańska Street and tram lines 1, 6 and 8. Wear bags to the front and keep wallets and phones in inner pockets.
SafetyUnlicensed taxis, especially at the airport and main station, frequently overcharge; use the Bolt or Uber apps or the airport train instead.
RulesSince January 2026 a Clean Transport Zone (SCT/LEZ) covering about 60% of the city fines non-compliant older cars 500 PLN via cameras. The Old Town is car-free anyway, so park at a Park & Ride and use trams or walk.
MannersSt Mary's Basilica is a working church: visits are restricted during Mass, there is a separate tourist entrance, and modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) and quiet are expected. Tower tickets are sold same-day, on site only.
SeasonThe summer peak (June-August) is very crowded with heat and occasional downpours. In December the whole square hosts a famous Christmas market at its most atmospheric, but expect big crowds and cold.
Practical info
The square is about a 15-minute walk from Kraków Główny station via the Barbican and Floriańska Gate; the nearest trams stop at Poczta Główna and Teatr Bagatela, and the Old Town is pedestrian-only. The square is free, but the Cloth Hall gallery, Rynek Underground museum and St Mary's tower each charge admission (roughly 35/36/20 PLN for adults, with some free days such as Tuesdays) and may need timed or advance booking, so confirm current prices and hours on the official sites before you go.
