The Hohenzollern Bridge is a railway bridge spanning the Rhine right beside Cologne Cathedral, and with around 1,500 train crossings a day it is Germany's busiest rail bridge. Completed in 1907–1911, it was blown up by German forces in 1945 during World War II and later rebuilt; today it carries six tracks plus dedicated pedestrian and cycle paths on both sides. Since around 2008 couples have attached tens of tonnes of 'love locks' (Liebesschlösser) to its railings, and as of 2026 Deutsche Bahn still has no plans to remove them, keeping the bridge one of Cologne's signature sights. It makes a free, walkable crossing with sweeping views of the cathedral and old-town skyline.

SafetyThe area around the cathedral and central station draws big crowds where pickpockets operate. Wear your bag in front and keep your wallet and phone close.
SafetyThe walkways are shared by pedestrians and cyclists. Stay out of the marked cycle lane, watch for fast-moving bikes, and never cross onto the tracks — it is an active railway bridge.
SeasonWind off the Rhine makes it feel colder than the air temperature; winters are especially cold and wet. Bring a waterproof layer and dress in layers, as there is little shade or shelter on the bridge.
MannersIt is a popular photo spot and often busy. Don't block the path by lingering in the middle to shoot; keep to the right and be mindful of pedestrian and bicycle flow.
CautionPrices for locks and souvenirs vary from vendor to vendor. Beware of overpriced stalls near the bridge — buy in advance or check prices first — and ignore the fake petition or donation approaches common at tourist spots.

SeasonDuring Carnival (February) and the Christmas-market season (December) crowds swell and lodging and transport get packed. If you visit then, guard your belongings and build extra time into your plans.
