Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is a Gothic masterpiece begun in 1248 and completed in 1880, its 157-metre twin spires making it the tallest twin-spired church in the world. Built to house the golden Shrine of the Three Kings, it has been a major pilgrimage site for centuries, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and is Germany's most visited landmark with around 6 million visitors a year. From 1 July 2026 the long tradition of free entry ends and interior visits become ticketed, so booking ahead and checking current fees now matters more than ever. Standing right beside Cologne's main station, it is easy to fit into a rail-based trip.

RulesFrom 1 July 2026 interior visits are ticketed (around €12 for adults). Attending a service or entering for prayer is free, as is entry for children up to age 13. Booking online in advance is recommended; prices, exemptions and booking rules may change, so confirm on the official site.
SeasonIn the July-August peak, arrive right at opening to avoid crowds; roughly 11:00-15:00 is busiest with tour groups.
SafetyThe main station and cathedral square are known pickpocket hotspots. Wear your bag in front, keep it zipped, and mind your wallet and phone.
CautionWatch for clipboard 'petition' surveys that end in a donation demand, and people who slip a bracelet or flower into your hand and then ask for money. Just keep walking.
MannersThis is an active church: dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and stay quiet during Mass and prayer. Flash photography and tripods may be restricted.
SafetyThe tower climb is 533 steps up a narrow spiral staircase with no lift (about 100 m). Reconsider if you have knee or heart problems or fear of heights or enclosed spaces, and carry water in summer.
Practical info
The cathedral stands directly in front of Cologne's main station (Köln Hauptbahnhof), about a one-minute walk from trains, trams and the U-Bahn. Interior hours are broadly Mon-Sat 10:00-17:45 and Sun/church holidays 13:30-16:30, while the south-tower climb runs Mar-Oct 09:00-18:00 and Nov-Feb 09:00-16:00 (last entry 30 minutes before closing).
