Location

Overview

Kauppatori (Market Square) is Helsinki's most famous and international open-air market, set at the South Harbour by the Baltic Sea at the eastern end of the Esplanade Park. Vendors sell Finnish food such as salmon soup and fried fish, plus handicrafts and souvenirs, while heated café tents keep visitors warm even in winter. The Suomenlinna ferry pier sits right beside the square, making it a natural starting point for sightseeing, and the Baltic Herring Market held every October since 1743 is one of Finland's oldest continuous event traditions. In 2026 it remains a lively downtown landmark ringed by the Presidential Palace and City Hall, ideal for a half-day of strolling, snacking and boat tours.
