Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss) is a red-sandstone palace perched above the Neckar River and the Old Town, and one of the most celebrated icons of German Romanticism. Built up over centuries from the 13th century onward, it was ravaged by war and lightning strikes and survives today as a hauntingly beautiful ruin. As of 2026 the castle is fully open, easily reached by the Bergbahn funicular, and famous for its summer illumination-and-fireworks nights. It pairs perfectly with a stroll through Heidelberg's Old Town as a half-day visit.

SeasonThe summer castle illumination and fireworks (Schlossbeleuchtung) are scheduled for June 6, July 11 and September 5, 2026 — free to watch but extremely crowded. Book viewing spots (Old Bridge, riverside) and lodging early. In winter (Nov–Mar) the funicular closes earlier, around 17:00.
SafetyThe Burgweg footpath up to the castle, plus the ruin's steps and cobblestones, are steep and uneven. Wear sturdy, flat, comfortable shoes and do not climb onto crumbling walls or beyond the railings.
CautionBuy tickets at Bergbahn station counters or the official schloss-heidelberg.de. Some third-party resellers mark the €11 official price up substantially. Restaurants right by the castle can be pricey tourist traps — check the menu prices first.
MannersThis is a top photo spot, so the courtyard and terraces get busy. Don't climb on or lean against the ruins, keep quiet during guided tours, and note that tripods and drones may be restricted.

From Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, take a bus or tram to the Old Town (Kornmarkt/Rathaus), about 10–15 minutes, then ride the Bergbahn funicular from the Kornmarkt lower station up to the 'Schloss' stop (or walk the steep Burgweg path, roughly 10 minutes). The courtyard, Great Tun and Apothecary Museum are open daily 9:00–18:00 (last admission 17:30); confirm current prices, hours and fireworks dates on the official site before you go.
