🇩🇪 Heidelberg Old Bridge

Alte Brücke (Karl-Theodor-Brücke) · 하이델베르크

Location

Overview

The Old Bridge (officially the Karl-Theodor-Brücke) is Heidelberg's iconic red-sandstone arch bridge spanning the Neckar River to link the Old Town with the Neuenheim district; built in 1786–1788 under Elector Karl Theodor, it is the ninth bridge to stand on this spot. The sweeping view of Heidelberg Castle and the old town from the bridge makes it the city's most-photographed landmark, and a stroll across takes in the medieval bridge gate and the famous bronze bridge monkey at its southern end. As of 2026 restoration of the piers' balconies is underway, so scaffolding covers some sections, but the bridge remains open and free to pedestrians and cyclists year-round. Frame it as an easy, unticketed walk to enjoy before heading up to the castle.

Practical info

From Heidelberg main station (Hauptbahnhof) take a bus or tram into the Old Town (near Universitätsplatz or the Marktplatz), then it is a 5–10 minute walk to the bridge. The bridge is open free year-round with no ticket or set hours, but check for 2026 restoration closures and confirm the latest prices and opening times for the castle and nearby sights; a Deutschlandticket or regional VRN ticket is handy for local transport.
