🇻🇳 Hanoi Old Quarter (36 Streets)

Phố cổ Hà Nội · 하노이

Location

Overview

Hanoi's Old Quarter (36 Streets) is the historic heart of the city, just north of Hoan Kiem Lake. It grew from craft and trading guilds that gathered here in the 13th century under the Ly and Tran dynasties, each street specializing in a single trade—silver on Hang Bac, silk on Hang Gai, votive paper on Hang Ma. Today its maze of narrow 'tube houses', French-colonial facades, street stalls and markets makes it a living museum of Hanoian life, food and nightlife.

Practical info

On weekends a pedestrian zone typically runs from Friday evening (around 7 PM) to Sunday midnight, closing 16 streets around Hoan Kiem Lake to traffic (verify current hours and extent). The best times to visit are spring (Mar-Apr) and autumn (Sep-Nov), with mild 18-25°C weather ideal for walking; May-Sep is hot, humid and prone to sudden downpours. Stalls and markets are largely cash-based (bring small VND notes), though QR mobile payments are increasingly accepted.
